Spin off of @Cannonballer's thread about wind direction. Figured it might be helpful in the future to log when our mountains have wind holds so we have a database to reference back to. Please use the following template- Mountain: Lift(s) Impacted: Wind Speed: Wind Direction:

Burke on Saturday was quite amazing, tons of snow and very little wind . maybe 20 Kts north west and it blew up the lift line no effects at all, Biggest crown I ever saw there, lots of tickets dangling from jackets. most people I talked to on lift are new to Burke, a very good sign. they do have some good stay and ski packages at hotel but the crowd was way more than that. Deepest skiing I have seen in New England , I felt like I was out west !!!

Saturday, March 23 was probably the best powder day of the season at most places. Sunday, March 24 was one of the best bluebird days of the season at most places. Does that make this the best weekend of the 2018-2019 season?? It gets my vote. There *might* have been better individual days here and there throughout the season, but I don't think there was anything better back-to-back and on a weekend.

Most likely my last day. Been an awful spring but today was pretty awesome. Down to just Superstar unless you're fine with walking.

Seventieth day today was a memorable one. Bagged out Friday due to rain, was awoken by the sound of sleet on the skylight around 6:00 today. By the time I checked outside it had changed to snow. Several inches had accumulated when I got to kbl around 8:00. Early runs on ovation were spectacular, not many pictures - only had a few hours and it was so good I didnt want to stop and get the phone out.

HG opened a bit before lunch (just after 11:30). This pic was taken at 11:46: Yea...those were definitely the worst lines I can ever remember seeing. ME being nearly completely on windhold makes a bit difference. The skiing itself was excellent though. Just had to think carefully about which run to take as you weren't going to get a lot of them in with those crowds.

Attitash had a quote to put a new lift up the old top notch double chair line 4 or 5 years ago for 4 Mil, how foolish were they to pass on that, Peaks resort needs someone that has some vision, or gives a crap about skiing to turn the ship at Attitash. If they don't NH will need to widen 302 to handle the additional traffic to BW

    Problem addressed going forward....

I'm personally of the opinion that having a HSQ to the summit of Attitash would neither attract nor detract customer demand. I think the primary client of Attitash is there because it is close to N Conway, has slopeside lodging (something not common in the MWV) and is generally a good place to bring a family due to having terrain for all ability levels . Also, it's less crowded than Loon with more amenities than Wildcat while being larger than Cranmore so there is going to naturally be some demand for that. As a standalone mtn I think not having the HSQ would hurt them more than being tied in with Wildcat. I'd guess that most of the Peaks passholders in the area are buying passes primarily to ski Wildcat. The day trip/week long ski and stay patron is keeping Attitash afloat (in addition to their summer operation) Not having a HSQ to one of their peaks I don't think keeps that family from coming to Tash. They can look and say we can get to the top of Bear Peak on a fast lift. I'm not sure the Wildcat skier has many other options as well and Peaks knows this so they wont really lose a significant # of passes just because the summit triple is old and slow at Attitash. I also don't think for the advanced/expert day tripper that having a fast sumitt lift would make folks spend their $ at Attitash over a different mtn (say Cannon) The terrain off the sumitt (wilfred's gawm) and just below (tim's trauma, idiot's option) is a lot of fun but I know I personally wouldn;t go there just for that (HSQ or not) I enjoy Attitash/Bear Peak (my family owned a condo nearby for 8 yrs and I have hundreds of days there) However until/unless they get split up from Wildcat I don;t think peaks has any real incentive to change anything up. Back in the ASC days attitash had to and did try harder. just my $.02

Wow best of both worlds. I bought Epic passes for the family in April, fully expecting to boycott the lack of investment in Attitash's triple. Guess I can still ski Wildcat and the kids still get to ski Mt Snow. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Northeast Mountain Sports mobile app

Made a call to catch the last week for The new six pack with Fcksummer. Snowdon was showing a lot debris. Peak was still in good shape. Double Dipper was awesome. Best runs were off Superstar chair though. A few woods runs. Fresh snow was sticky in them though.

Thoroughly enjoyed the season despite breaking a couple of ribs. Loads of good skiing, managed to hit a number of powder days, too. My best memory of 2018 would be in November after returning from flying from across the world, getting up at 5:30 am because I couldn't sleep due to time change, making a solid breakfast, and driving up to Wildcat on a whim for a powder day that I didn't even know had happened or was forecast.

Pretty great season for me, my work schedule coincided with the best condition and storm periods to be home for. All in all, I think I hit 6 powder days starting in October (if you can count high elevation, low angle natural terrain as an actual powder day) with the big Nov 27th Powder Day at SR that skied like the calendar read Feb 27th and several more in January and February. Only hit one weak powder day on our trip to Utah, but for me that seems the norm when we head out west. Still a ton of skiing to go for me, Mammoth next week, then Killington til its gone. Wife wants to head back to CA, either Squaw or Mammoth for some July 4th turns since both say they will be open through to then at least so we can say we skied it then! Love her!

The funny thing is (before Wicked Hard was put on the map), to me that WAS the entrance to WH as the right fork. If the Upper Hard entrance has been there for a while, I was oblivious to that much easier entrance. The primary line (left fork) that puck it calls obvious I know by a different name. Though, obvious is a fairly appropriate name. Funny how the same line can be known by multiple names! The big problem with that line is knowing when it is good to go or not. The final pitch is a rocky mess and it dumps out into a stream as puck it mentioned. It is a committing line with no bail out. You can have a really bad time near the bottom if it isn't good to go yet or is past prime. Overall, a bit more aggressive of a line choice than WH due to more variable lower elevation conditions. A bit steeper as well.

My wife's family are all "goofy-Newfies' hailing from the fishing fleets of Newfoundland. It's always been a bit of a sore spot, embarrassment, and taboo subject around Boxing Day. But with today's news we just locked in basically free skiing at Jay and Burke for the forseeable future!! I urge anyone with CAN roots to jump on this https://vtskiandride.com/jay-peak-and-burke-sold-to-quebec/ A Mari usque ad Mare!!

Looking for first-hand expert knowledge about individual resorts and how they handle various wind directions. In this case I'm especially calling on @Brad J to learn what he knows about Burke. How does it handle NW wind? (I'm guessing not well). I'll speak for Cannon. NW is generally OK. Although obviously once you get into the 40+ range like they are calling for tomorrow all bets are off. Should be able to spin Zoomer at a minimum, and likely a few others. South winds are the guaranteed shutdown for Cannon. How about other spots (K, SB, SR, SL, Wildcat, etc)?? Who's knows the deal at their home mountain?

I'm a very serious person. And frankly weather forecasting and skiing leave no room for anything but grave seriousness. It's not like we're talking about something frivolous like golf.

Everything that @xwhaler and @Jully just posted is really insightful and cuts to the heart of Attitash's problems. I 100% agree with all of it. One thing neither of them said (probably because they both felt it was obvious) is the location and distance to get there. So I'll state the obvious just to add it to the conversation. A potential customer has to drive past all of the other competing mountains to get there! If Attitash had all of its existing issues but was quicker to get to than Waterville, Loon, Cannon, Bretton Woods, and Cranmore it might steal away some of the market. The only place (slightly) farther is Wildcat, but they aren't really in competition. From the 93 side especially it's crazy to drive all the way past the others for what Attitash offers. From the Rt 16 side they do a little better. But that cuts the potential market down by a lot.

The crux of the problem with a Tenney pass is that it's for "...every day that Tenney is open....". Which isn't a lot of days, and those days are unpredictable. They open very late in the season, they aren't open seven days a week, they are closed frequently when you'd expect them to be open, etc. Unless you live right there you're probably much safer with day passes.
