I'm hopeful that this news pushed more of the independents to rally together. For next yr I'm buying an Indy Pass as well as a bunch of vouchers through various means. Will not have a traditional season pass but rather chase variety/snow as I like crowd avoidance and being able to ski different mtns with my 2 young boys. With a young family we place a premium on having uncrowded lodges, low/zero lift lines, and parking that doesn't require a shuttle bus. This is a pretty nice little collection that I'm hoping grows by another mtn or 2 for New England. I can definitely see myself getting 2 days in at Pats/Magic/S6/Bolton at minimum with a possible Berkshire East/Catamount trip as well. I'd like to see Black NH/Tenney/Middlebury/Granite Gorge consider jumping on this pass...they could raise the price up to $399 and add more mtns and I think it could be fairly popular. http://www.indyskipass.com/

Most likely my last day. Been an awful spring but today was pretty awesome. Down to just Superstar unless you're fine with walking.

Seventieth day today was a memorable one. Bagged out Friday due to rain, was awoken by the sound of sleet on the skylight around 6:00 today. By the time I checked outside it had changed to snow. Several inches had accumulated when I got to kbl around 8:00. Early runs on ovation were spectacular, not many pictures - only had a few hours and it was so good I didnt want to stop and get the phone out.

Wow best of both worlds. I bought Epic passes for the family in April, fully expecting to boycott the lack of investment in Attitash's triple. Guess I can still ski Wildcat and the kids still get to ski Mt Snow. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Northeast Mountain Sports mobile app

I got my fat ass out for first ride last night in Andover. 5 miles. About a hour. Couple of climbs were tough and stopped. I did not feel to bad after but ass was sore.

Just finished a ride at Green Woodlands. Wow! Everything that @2manyhobbies said about this place is spot on. The down is an absolute blast! I only wish I had some decent DH skills to really do it justice. Next time I will ride flat pedals for sure. I was a little freaked being locked in for some the high speed berms. The climbs are extensive but they are so well built that they are relatively painless. The whole time riding I was trying to figure out what the deal is with the place. So much land, time, effort, and money has gone into it, but it's free to use? I came up with a million theories about what the real agenda must be. But then I got talking to some folks in the parking lot who know the landowner. Apparently he's just a guy who made a ton of cake in tech. He bought ~20,000 acres and decided to turn it into an outdoor playground for the community. Amazing! It doesn't quite have the aesthetic charm or vibe of Kingdom Trails, but they trail quality is definitely on par and it's way less crowded. I'll be back for sure...a lot.

Best post Ive seen in a looong time !!! LOL ! Can sometimes suck....hahaha so freakin true !! BW as a back up plan is Good Idea !!!
  18. 1 point
I think a LOT of the BW crowd are people without passes. They have done a great job increasing traffic with their "seasonal rental program" with local ski shops. Kids rent skis for the season (<$150) and it comes with a free BW pass. Parents then do trips up there a few weekends/year. Based on the crowds there on the weekends and holiday weeks, I don't see there being an incentive to participate in a bigger collective. My family does the WMSP because we have a place in Lisbon and Cannon conditions can sometimes suck (ice, wind, etc), so having BW as an option is worth the extra $300. I also suck in the trees so I like the BW glades ☺️

Someone mentioned the idea of Forerunner at Stowe going to HS6 and moving the Quad to Attitash. That seems like a win, win to me. Curious what you think might happen with Jay that will turn you off if it gets gobbled up. Jay's kinda already gotten the whole Disneyland treatment already. More snowmaking and grooming? More snowmaking and grooming is definitely my great concern for Wildcat. Shortening the season is also a concern. Cat is probably the most "raw" 2k vert ski area in the East after MRG. Though I suppose Jay probably ties Cat. Both a distant second to MRG. Cat only makes snow and grooms about half the trails. I fear Vail turns trails like Upper Wildcat and all of Gondiline into man made boulevards. End of the day, I'm not too worried. Looking at the Vail portfolio, Wildcat is probably near the very bottom of their list for investment targets that will produce substantial ROI. As long as we keep our roughly 11/10 to 5/1 season with minimal manicuring of the slopes, I'll likely remain happy and not consider change. Where I live, the only reasonable option for change is Cannon. I've considered it many times, but fewer crowds and less grooming keeps me loyal to Cat. I don't know that the fundamentals of the WMSP really change. The net result for the NH skier is a $70 price increased ($630 to $700), and added benefit of Sunapee. The Super Pass still offers a better variety in the White Mountains. The other part that could alter the value is if Vail actually fixes Attitash. Imagine Attitash with a functional high speed lift and roofs that don't leak.

I'm really interested to see how the rest of the non-conglomerate ski areas respond to this. Full Epic Pass = $939, Epic Local = $699. Full Ikon = $1049, Ikon Base = $749. How can places like Waterville, Cannon, BW, or Jay justify their single mountain pass prices (approx $988, $829, $999, and $849 respectively)?? The small combo passes like White Mountain Superpass (>$1,000) and Jay/Burke ($1,009) are even worse . They are going to have to either drop their pass prices significantly, join a much larger combo-pass, come up with something else innovative, or get crushed! What's it going to be?
  22. 1 point
You might be right about the crossover fact. The price? I dunno. Stowe installed the Forerunner 7 years ago now at a cost of $6M. Attitash lift would be of similar length to the Forerunner and more complicated because of the crossover. It might also require some line widening during the stretch immediately above the Yankee. Factor all that, inflation and both major lift companies saying they are short on help and I would not be surprised if that lift costs closer to $8M. I'm having a hard time coming to terms with this. Everything changes. Attitash definitely changes for the better. I'm not so sure about Wildcat. I can't imagine what the Cat is like under Vail administration.

I need to retire. With the holiday break I was able to ride 7 out of 10 days. 3 states, 6 different trail systems, 65 miles. Now it's back to the grind and I'll be lucky to get out at all in the next 2 weeks.

Had to do some fishing for work last week. We were targeting little white perch (~6"). Instead we landed a couple of monsters! First time I've even been fishing and caught something ~600x bigger than I hoped.

Havasu Creek. About a 4 hour hike and total to Lower Beaver Falls which is not pictured. This was the beginning of the hike, the crystal blue water only exists in this Creek and in the Little Colorado River (LCR). The Colorado River was green and clean the whole time!

Took some time to head up Monadnock this past weekend. Never been, but thats one heck of a tough hike! Looking forwards to more of them in the future. It was a very strong, incredibly summit!! Saw a cool tree, too. Also sherpa'd up obligatory beers.

Nice! I have to get back there. Last time I was there was April 30, 2010. It was a freak 2 foot snowstorm at Cannon the night before. We skinned up in the blazing sun, drank a few beers, took a slushy run down, drank some more beers, then headed over to Franklin. We didn't have much left in the tank by then so I can't say I experienced the place. I'm looking forward to getting in there this season for some legit riding.

Will be tough, but I'm in already for the K Triathlon Saturday (assuming they don't postpone it due to too wet trails for MTN biking) and SR on Sunday (have to do so e stuff at condo and I was a complainer when they were going to chop that weekend. Feel I have to show up regardless of wx now). Will suck after 4 unreal spring days at Mammoth this week.

We have a place in Lisbon, which is a 2 1/4 hour drive from home on Friday night. Then we drive about an hour from there to Wildcat on Saturday. And since we don't have Peak passes, it's $156 for our family of 5 to ski (little one is still free). I'm leaning toward no, as we have stuff we could (and probably should) do at home, but I really want 1 more day of skiing!

That entire article was douche level 12!! But this one was especially clueless. There is freaking dirt everywhere in snow! And I have never gone through a season without at least 2 major grease-from-lift-tower incidents.

Good season for me, have about 40 ski days and hope to get 10-15 more before driving back east in May, but... This might be an opportunity to clear my chest about a few things on the more challenging side of a season spent in the west. I retired in Feb and immediately drove west for a three month stay. Had only 4 ski days back east by President's Day. I was in lousy shape and suffered a lot of aches and pains trying to ski myself into shape in my mid-60s. It's been great and super snowy, but doing much of my skiing on storm days at Snowbird was a harsh training ground. Between the challenging terrain there, frequent low-viz conditions, and aggressive type of skiers on the mtn, I often felt like I should "get out of the way old man." It's mostly me and my inabilities to blame, but also I think I need some new skis. One wimpy 80mm ski and one old 106mm ski isn't cutting it. Now I know why my son and other serious skiers out here have quivers of a half dozen skis or more. Now that spring has finally come the soft snow conditions on the groomers are comforting, but I can't forget how punishing the off-piste storm skiing was on my body last month. I rode a chair yesterday with a Utah veteran and told him some of this. He was encouraging and said it could take a few years to learn the mtn, the snow conditions, and environment so that you ski Snowbird efficiently and know best places to ski on different types of days. This includes knowing where the best snow is, dressing right, picking the best skis for the day, exerting energy when necessary, conserving when not, etc. And of course, building fitness gradually rather than intensely after sitting in an office cubicle the first half of the winter. I'm used to skiing in 50 yrd bursts, out here they ski in 500 yrd bursts. I'm used to lots of quick turns, out here fewer turns and high speeds. I'm used to elevation 2000 to 3000', out here it's 8000 to 12500' 🙂 I'm doing a lot of home improvement projects too so my rest days have not exactly been rest days. It's also been challenging to stay harmonious with my non-skiing wife who is accompanying me. She's the lead on a lot of home improvement stuff and I'm the laborer. We've done some fun non-ski and non-home improvement things together, but not enough. Snowbird on mid-winter snow days is crazy. Big traffic issues getting up the canyon and lots of competition for the goods on the hill. I took an early April trip to Telluride and Crested Butte and one of the things I most enjoyed about both places was the small crowds. Some of my most fun days in Utah have been when I connected and skied with visiting friends. But I don't really have any local friends to hang out with. I expect to spend a lot of time out here next winter too, so maybe that will develop. Even a winter in paradise has its challenges 🙂

The season started as well as I could ever hope. Wildcat top-to-bottom nearly 100% skiable on October 27. And they stayed open for the season (at least weekends) from that point forward. Jay Peak was stellar in mid-December for my annual trip. There was crazy deep snow in St Anton for my trip. Whistler was a mixed bag (as it often is), but I'll take it. The Mount Washington Valley had about as much snow as I have ever seen there. 100% open lasted until the end. What was the season missing? There were no real day trip mid-week powder days at Crotched or Ragged. At this late April warm spell is bad. Sad!

Thoroughly enjoyed the season despite breaking a couple of ribs. Loads of good skiing, managed to hit a number of powder days, too. My best memory of 2018 would be in November after returning from flying from across the world, getting up at 5:30 am because I couldn't sleep due to time change, making a solid breakfast, and driving up to Wildcat on a whim for a powder day that I didn't even know had happened or was forecast.

I think you hit it on the head with point #2. I've been noticing that as well. I'm sitting in my office mid-week seeing great conditions and then get that damn rain/thaw/freeze several times right before the weekend when I'm able to get up there. I feel like overall I skied less powder days (even mini powder days of just a quick couple inches overnight) this year compared to other years. Luckily I did get to ski a lot mid-week in December and of course I was able to take advantage of that epic 30" powder weekend in March. Point #2 is what prevents me from rating it higher than "Above average". On the plus side we weren't back to square one in late Feb like we were the prior couple seasons and I was able to ski glades far earlier and more consistently than other years (even after some of the freeze/thaws they still held up surprisingly well). However outside of that one big dump, March and April were somewhat disappointing compared to the past couple seasons (granted we really needed them the past couple seasons to avoid those seasons being a loss). Last year Castlerock made it to April 22 thanks to all the late season snow. This year it was done as of this past weekend even with the deep snow-pack we've had. I think that may also highlight the difference in snowpack between the upper and lower mountain however. Upper mountain still certainly seems deeper than normal meanwhile at the base it seems either close to normal or maybe even slightly below normal. Even this year in the spring it seems we're getting somewhat screwed many weekends either with rain and/or low clouds. Anyone that had a lot of flexibility absolutely could have rated this season as one of the best ever though and I could completely understand that. Some points further north may have also fared even better to allow that rating too (my personal rating is based primarily off the Sugarbush area). If I had to assign a grade, I'd probably put it in the B+ or maybe A- category. Eliminate those multiple late week thaw/freeze events though and it would have been at least an A if not A+.
