Boat Life (Salt & Fresh)

Recommended Posts

Boat is in for the season. Quick little shakedown cruise this AM but pretty breezy, cold and raw out there on the river.

Feels great to be in though and looking forward to lots of adventures with the family this year.

50th anniversary this yr for the old girl feels pretty cool still seaworthy enough to trust with my young boys in all sorts of weather.

Mothers Day cruise tomorrow and with a dock and dine for lunch. Should be better weather

Damn that water was brutal though launching it. Feet went numb almost immediately.

Didn't freeze to death today? I bet the weather was much nicer. But this is still home improvement season for me. I have to work myself through the backlog.

Had a short window before the rain comes this afternoon so took advantage and got an early start. Gorgeous out there albeit pretty chilly. The early morning sun did help though.

Looks like you have another window in the first half of this weekend. Sunday and Monday look sub-optimal.

Saturday we are definitely gonna be out most of the day followed by my marina's Memorial Day Potluck BBQ. The marina supplies oysters and beer/wine though which is nice. Good time to see a few faces from last season.

Sunday/Monday playing by ear....Seacoast could be a bit chilly from what I'm reading.

Yesterday was a pretty great day out there but wasn't without a tense moment. Nice cruise out to Little Harbor in Newcastle to grab a mooring and hang for a bit.

Cruise by to see the USS Manchester which is a brand new Navy Ship getting commissioned yesterday before departing for San Diego...lotta boat traffic around that.

After about 30 mins we decided to head to lunch and I fired the motor up. Started, I let it idle then went off the mooring. Then it cut out. We started drifting fast towards a giant rock jetty and I was unable to get motor running again.

Starting to get nervous and with 2 little kids now crying and scared I attempted to paddle and raft up to another boat but was unable to. About 3 mins before smashing into the jetty I was able to flag down another boat who towed me to a mooring.

Close call and after a few mins taking apart the fuel line I found the source....the nipple into the outboard was stuck shut...stick key into the little check valve and gas starts pouring out. Likely a little salt in there made it stick.

After that a great rest of the afternoon. Hit up a new spot for us (Morrissons Lobster Shack) on Badgers Island in Kittery ME. Really authentic/rustic BYOB seafood joint where the 2 waitresses alternate between slinging food and watching the lobster/clam boil.

Cruise back to my marina and enjoyed the pot luck memorial day party they put on.

Two local oyster companies keep their boats there so they were on site shucking fresh caught for us. So good. A commercial fisherman who is on a mooring showed up with 2 giant platters of lobster rolls. Score!

Interesting day that coulda gone in a very different direction. Always an adventure out there for us.

Nice Chris! The owner of Fat Dog oysters (Jay) is a good friend of mine. He credits me with getting him started in the business. He used to come out on my farm to learn the ropes when he was getting started. Now he's got a bigger, better operation going then I ever dreamed of. Next time you see him on the water drop my name and maybe score some freebies!

That's awesome! I did chat him up a bit and really cool guy. He had some massive ones going and kept putting out more even after Fox Point was done.

He oysters off a pontoon boat all rigged up with a crane....checked it out pretty great setup given the deck space the way he has it modified.

I'm thinking about renting a boat on Lake Kezar next weekend. Anyone ever rent there?

I want to be present for what is potentially the start of the summer ski sales in the valley, and it's an easy drive.

Went down to RI this wknd to borrow my uncle's boat as he was very generous about letting us use it.... Going to be upgrading as our old girl is just too small as boys get bigger and we want to do some overnight trips. Wanted to get a sense of the layout of this model and to see if it would work for our family.

Great weather, managed to handle the big boat just fine and really had a great time. East Greenwich to Dutch Harbor over to Newport to spend the night on a mooring in Wickford. Back up to East Greenwich this AM early.

About 50 miles round trip

1989 Grady White Sailfish 28' with original 2 stroke 200 HP twin Yamahas

Will be looking for this model as well as a couple others over the next few months.

Phone died so couldn't take more pics of Newport but those boats/yachts in there are just insane (when $ has $!)IMG_20180630_112743577.thumb.jpg.d3bda58d6f6faa4b13aa0d9956478854.jpgreceived_10212888100744733.jpeg.34765447cf57cc057fb20723b93b70f9.jpegIMG_20180630_131121770.thumb.jpg.a9434347206c8db2f08d816863c0cf7e.jpgIMG_20180630_125935233_HDR.thumb.jpg.80395ff6602b40540ffb10b48a3d6188.jpgreceived_10212887723735308.jpeg.2d6dac4adc2ef447ced5362673128bed.jpeg

Bump
I am closing on a new to me boat Saturday AM down in Eastern CT. Grady White Sailfish 272 with twin 225 HP Yamaha Saltwater Series 2 strokes.

@frapcap and @Weatherman have offered to help me and my 5 yr old son bring the boat back to NH by water. We have a little over 200 miles to go and weather looks good at this point.
Long as no one gets sea sick or eaten by those sharks off the coast I'm reading about we should have a really fun adventure. We'll try and send some pics along our journey.
